Deepfake Ukrainian diplomat targeted US senator on Zoom call

U.S. Senator Ben Cardin was recently targeted by a deepfake operation impersonating Ukraine’s former Foreign Minister, Dmytro Kuleba. The deepfake, which sought to manipulate the senator into discussing sensitive political topics related to the upcoming U.S. Presidential election, appeared highly convincing. Cardin, suspicious of the interaction, cut the call and reported the incident, which is now under FBI investigation. This event follows previous cases of deepfakes used in attempts to deceive Western political figures, underscoring the growing threat of AI-generated impersonations in both politics and business.
